Among all biological organisms human beings are at the top of the evolutionary tree having the feeling of curiosity to know many new things. Science is the innate human curiosity and Anthropology is the holistic study of man. Anthropology studies the origin, evolution and variation of humans both from biological and socio-cultural perspectives.
Ispat Autonomous College, Rourkela, takes the pride of being the only college in Sudergarh District to have Anthropology as a subject both in +2 and Graduation level. The Department of Anthropology in Ispat Autonomous College was established in the year 1980-81. Honours programme in anthropology under CBCS pattern was started in the year 2019 with 16 seats. Currently there are three teaching faculties working in the department.

Activities of the department
1. Fieldwork: Anthropology relies on fieldwork as the primary way of conducting research. Fieldwork remains at the heart of anthropological research and continues to be the rite of passage of aspiring anthropologists. Keeping the legacy of fieldwork tradition in anthropology, each year the +3 Final Year (Honours) students of our department go for fieldwork as a part of their curriculum. In the academic session 2021-2022, we have conducted fieldwork among the Oraons of Luakera Village of Sundergarh district of Odisha. The students have submitted fieldwork reports based on the data obtained from the fieldwork.
2. Museum Visit: A museum collects, preserves, carries out researches and provide education about humanities. Museums inspire and engage the visitors to create and understanding about how the world works and lives. Museum visit by the students is a part of the Anthropology (Honours)course curriculum. Each year the department conducts visit to different museums of Odisha. In the academic session 2021-2022 the students of our department have visited the Odisha State Tribal Museum in Bhubaneswar where they learnt about the life of tribal peoples of Odisha. They also visited the Cultural Museum, Prehistoric Archeology Laboratory and Biological Laboratory, P.G. Department of Anthropology, Utkal University where they gained knowledge on various implements, ornaments, hunting instruments, clothings, utensils of various tribal groups of India, stone tools used by prehistoric man of different cultural phases and obtained some practical skills in Biological Anthropology. The students have submitted project reports based on the museum visit.
3. Departmental Seminar: Our department conducts departmental seminars where the students are given chance to present on a topic of their own and convey their ideas. It is followed by discussion with the students and teachers which can make others what the topic is all about.
4. Department Laboratory: Students understand a topic better when they do practical. Our department has a good laboratory where students do practical on different topics like anthropometry, somatometry, craniometry, dermatoglyphics, serology and prehistoric archaeology. The teachers are well experienced in practical skills and impart practical training and knowledge on various aspects of anthropology to the students according the syllabus.
